Job Hunt Adventure! By Krista

Last Wednesday, Some of us teens went on a Job Hunt. First we went on the BIG YELLOW BUS!!!
At first I didn't want to go because I wasn't really looking for a job, but I went! Before we left I knew that we were going to get applications because we are awesome! The first place we went was Leatherby's. A couple of teens went in without Bree's help! They came out with no application :( The next place we went to was the West Jordan Recreation Center. I like to go here sometimes so, I went in with another teen. I came out with the first application! bahahaha. After a group of teens went in after me to get applications. Later I accidentally ripped my application...
We went to other stores/restaurants and most of them were either not hiring or you had to apply online. There was one place that was most exciting. It was called, "Hawaiian Shave". A teen girl named Kim really wanted to go here and so we went. It was funny because the work guy was talking to her for a long time and even gave her a FREE snow cone! She came back telling us that he was interviewing her on the spot and that they are interested in her!
Finally we got done from going store to store. I thought it was pretty easy and others did too. I think it's more fun to go in groups! Overall I had a good time and I hope that some of the teens get one of the jobs!

Here are some places we went :)

Congratulations Krista! (by Bree)

I want to take a moment to congratulate Krista C. for her acceptance into the BYU "SOAR" program this summer!  "SOAR, or Summer of Academic Refinement, is a five-day college preparation program which prepares and informs students of the educational benefits and expectations at Brigham Young University."  Krista has expressed her desire to attend Brigham Young University after she graduates from high school.  She hopes to major in dance and would love to be a member of the BYU Cougarette dance team.  In February I took a group of teens to one of the Cougarette dance concerts and those dancers are amazing!  Krista is determined to work hard and do all she can to prepare over the next year.

Krista found out about the SOAR program from Josh, one of the teen staff at the Club.  He attended the program years ago and thought it would be something she'd enjoy.  Krista did the whole application and scholarship on her own.  She worked on it in the computer lab at the Club and knew which areas she needed her mom to complete.  I was impressed with Krista's commitment and level of responsibility in following through with requirements before the assigned deadline.

Krista received the "congratulations" e-mail last week and we were so excited!  It is a great feeling to see Club members succeed and experience great accomplishments.  I know this is only the beginning for Krista and she will continue to have awesome things come her way.  We're so proud of all of our Club members who work hard, set goals, and stick with it even when life gets hard.

It's a privilege to be a part of the Boys & Girls Club.

Club Favorites... For Now (by Bree)

Trends come and go, and some just stay forever.  Here are some of the trends, favorites, and or obsessions that have passed through the Midvale Teen Program this year. :)

Lumpy Space Princess (Cartoon Network)

Justin Bieber-- the one and only

One Direction-- gaining popularity day by day!

"Hunger Games"... the movie AND the books!

Taylor Swift-- pretty sure she'd be fun to hang out with.

Katy Perry-- her songs will get stuck in your head for days!

Granola bars!  Thank you to the Utah Food Bank.  :)

Bethany Hamilton-- super inspiring!

Skate Park toys:  skate boards, scooters, etc.  The teens have skills.

Shoes!  Vans, Toms, Converse, Adidas, Puma, Nike,  you name it.  The teens love them.

Stay tuned for another update of Midvale Club Favorites!

Hillcrest Softball (by Bree)

"Go Karyana!  Go Alex!"

One of my favorite things to do as the Teen program director is to support the teens in their extracurricular activities.  This might include: dance concerts, choir concerts, sporting events, pep ralleys, homecoming events, etc.  I love blending into the crowd, sitting with Club members and/or parents, and cheering on the teens that I know.  It feels great to support them and to hopefully bring a smile to their face.

Recently I took a group of teens to a Hillcrest High School softball game.  Club members Karyana and Alex play on the team(s) and we wanted to show them our support.  It was also my Birthday so we were all in fun and energetic moods.  :)  Though we did watch most of the game, a lot of our attention was spent just playing and hanging out in the stands.

I love how random everyone is... except for Evelyn! :)

You can't watch a ball game without chomping on bubble gum!
My bubble was always the biggest. :)

Gross, Cloris.  It looks like her tongue deflated!

Got it just in time to see the bubble explode.

Superstar pose!

With the help of Krista's hair blowing in the wind, Cloris wanted to pretend she had long brown hair.
What do you think? :)

 Good Game, Ladies!

This is one of the best planks I've seen!  Krista is the master at this...   :)
