Hula Girls (by Bree)

During the month of April one of our volunteers, Emily Chang, from the University of Utah taught teen girls how to do a simple hula dance.  I'm not much of a dancer, myself, but I decided to join in on the fun.  Emily is naturally pretty soft-spoken and shy, but we got to know so much more of her fun personality through learning this dance from her!  She volunteered extra hours to help everyone learn the dance moves and had so much patience.  She was positive and encouraging and was so proud of our progress.  Even when Emily wasn't there, we still listened to the "Hula Girl" song and went over the simple choreography.  What started out as a small group of 3 or 4 girls expanded to 8 of us performing at the Talent Show.  Even "Chizzle," who normally wouldn't choose to dance in front of an audience stuck with it and went through with the performance.  It was awesome!

Emily brought lava-lavas for each girl to wear.  I was excited I got to wear the orange one. :)  She also brought leis for each of us, and beautiful "real" Hawaiian flowers to wear in our hair.  I'm pretty sure we all felt beautiful in our own, individual way.  Though our dance was far from perfect, we had fun performing at the Club talent show and I'd like to think the audience enjoyed it too!  I'm grateful for fantastic volunteers like Emily who sacrifice their time and energy to provide a lasting memories for the rest of us.  Hopefully we'll do something like this again soon!
